Manual Controlled Tester
Paper Tracking

Turn motor on, feed paper up through feed rolls 'X' and 'W' first and directly from paper feed off reel "Q". Then, with motor off, place paper at #1 through #6.
Then, push "W" roller's extended shaft to the right to free paper for pulling past wind up reel's hub (centralize paper before releasing shaft).
Place end of paper in hubs's slot, revolve shaft counterclockwise (using knurled nuts at rear of belt guard) to get 2 or more rounds of paper tight on hub.
Note: The two knurled nuts on wind up reel should only be tightened enough to cause wind up reel to revolve.
Norman Tool, Inc. has found that if the following procedure is used, they have very few problems making the paper and tape track properly.
To check Tester, do the following:
- Set up for testing, a specimen that has opposite surfaces parallel on the box anvil 'P'.
Note: A paint chip is good for this. - Check thumb screw to be sure screw bears on full flat of vertical shaft, (Use no tools to tighten).
- Move cam follower off cam as outlined above and on the continuous abrading page.
- Be sure 'N' frame is secured squarely at lowest position on vertical shaft, about 1/8" above cutout for '0' ring Assembly. (There is a bump on shaft at this position which is to prevent 'N' frame from falling lower and riding '0' ring).
- Start motor.
- If paper has too much side flow, loosen thumb screw in 'N' frame very slightly. (there is a
brass form fitting plug under thumb screw which could revolve and lose its form fit to vertical
shaft - if thumb screw is loosened too much). Now revolve 'N' frame very slightly to right or left
to get best paper tracking, and lock screw.
Note: The 4 nylon bearings in 'N' frame which also confine the edges of paper are set so that paper could move sideways about .008". If ALL features of Tester are adjusted properly, the paper will fluctuate between the ends of the 2 nylon bearings which are located at the outgoing side of 'N' frame. - Check horizontal position of the two reels for alignment with mechanism, if the reel location has been changed.
Note:
The following does not alleviate the necessity of setting up specimen parallel to paper's tangent at '0' ring.
The radial location of the 'N' frame is adjustable on the vertical shaft, this is to facilitate a very easy and fast method of correcting a slight side flow of paper.
The test area must be parallel to the horizontal tangent formed by the paper wrapped around the '0' ring. Use machinist's indicator surface gage Z to check X-Y Axis of test area.
It may be necessary from time to time to put the 'N' frame back to its original position as outlined in the above steps.
An immediate and continuous drifting of the paper between the 2" diameter feed roller and the 2" diameter spring loaded pressure roller denotes binding of the 'W' pressure roller, or uneven spring pressure (adjustable) on the pressure roller.
An appropriate amount of pressure applied in proper direction to the 1/2" diameter extension of pressure roller 'W' often is all that is required after starting a new roll of paper. See Page Number 4
